How to Choose Clothing for Your Photoshoot!
You’ve planned out your photoshoot - you know why you’re getting it, you know who’s involved, you’ve chosen your location - now what do you wear?
Unsurprisingly, clothing is a huge part of how good your photos will look! You want to have a beautiful, cohesive look between you, the other subjects of the shoot (if applicable) and the location you’ve selected.
This might sound like a lot, but it’s very simple. First of all, think of your location. Are we shooting on a beach at sunrise? Then softer colors are usually popular. White, blue, pink, and even green are all popular beach colors. To make it work with the atmosphere it’s best to keep these colors to pastels or muted tones over neon yellows, for example.
With that being said, it’s important to keep everyone in the photo within a certain tone or family of colors. You don’t all have to wear the same shade, but keeping it in the same family of tones will give your photos a cohesive, connected look!
The family above opted for blue and white! While they’re not all wearing matching clothing you can tell that they chose their outfits carefully to fit together.
Keeping the clothing style similar will also make a huge difference! For example, if one person is wearing a flowing dress but the other is in jeans this can give the photos an unbalanced look. You’ll want to compare outfits ahead of time to make sure everyone looks like they’re planning to be in the same photos! The vibes should match, and it should never look like one person cared more about the shoot than the other (especially in couples shoots!).
This couple kept it simple with all black for their sunset shoot, but their clothing choices also go perfect together! She chose a dress, and he went for a button down and all black jeans which kept them the same level of dressed up.
Another important factor is pattern! Large patterns are fine, but smaller, more complicated ones can look strange in photos. You’ll want to choose something with a pattern that doesn’t require being up close to distinguish to make sure it comes through clearly in your photos.
The girl on the left has a pattern on her dress, but it’s large enough that it doesn’t create any strange effects with the camera, and you can clearly make out what it is! By the way, this family of 14 chose to go with black and white clothing to make it easy for everyone to match.
If you plan on doing multiple outfits, it’s important to communicate that with us. We have a popup changing tent that we bring for clients planning to change during outdoor shoots, just in case there isn’t a bathroom nearby. It also helps us plan out the shoot timing wise. Always communicate with us so we’re capturing your vision!
This client went for 2 very different styles within the same shoot, so a full outfit change was needed!
Lastly, you’ll want to make sure you tried your outfits on BEFORE the day of your shoot! You never know if something will fit weird or be unflattering if you don’t try it on, so the best way to be prepared is to do a test run at home. This way you have a chance to make changes before you get to the location.
To summarize:
Keep your outfits in the same family of colors
Match the style of clothing to each other
Pay attention to the patterns
Let us know if you’re planning an outfit change
Try the clothes on before the day of your shoot
